From the Inside Out: Character Driven Stories
Character-driven stories, usually quieter and more slowly paced than their action-driven counterparts, bring unique challenges to the writer. How does a writer imbue an internal struggle with the same sense of urgency, physicality, and resonance that a plot-driven story has?
This lecture will examine the particular challenges of point of view, tension, and climactic moments as they relate to character-driven stories. Examples from authors like Katherine Mansfield, Sara Pennypacker, Jon Klassen, and Rainbow Rowell will offer suggestions about how to externalize the internal story for a riveting read.
Recommended reading: Miss Brill by Katherine Mansfield, Pax by Sara Pennypacker, Jon Klassen’s I Want My Hat Back, and Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor & Park.
