Welcome to Marjetta Geerling’s website! (That’s me!)
I am an author and Assistant Professor of English, two careers that are often hard to balance but equally challenging and fulfilling to me. In my writing, I focus on young adult fiction and specifically the interaction of socio-economic class, gender identity, community ties, personal integrity, and love (of course, the kind with kissing, but all other kinds, too). Interestingly, the same themes (but with less emphasis on kissy-face love) often evolve in college students’ writing in my Composition and Creative Writing classes at Broward College. My interest in both young adult fiction and teaching college stem from the same fascination: How do we craft our own identities?
In the About section, I talk all about myself, my background, and interests. It’s a little bit about how I’ve gone about crafting my identity and a lot about cute pictures of me as a kid.
On my Books page, you’ll find lots of information for my first novel Fancy White Trash. If you haven’t had the chance to get to know Abby and her crazy family, there’s a chapter excerpt and link to get the e-book. I hope to be adding to the books page soon. Stay tuned for updates!
The Workshops page introduces you to the variety of workshops I’ve presented in the past. I love speaking to other writers about writing, and welcome the opportunity to speak at conferences, school visits, reading and writing groups, or literary festivals. If the workshops I’ve already put together don’t work for you, I’m always happy to design something especially for your needs.
The Press page is my media kit where everything on it is meant to be downloadable and reused for speaking engagements.
On my blog, you’ll find posts about the writing process, influential books, personal essays about my life and my writing, craft oriented reflections, and miscellaneous topics that catch my fancy.
